NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman Announces 2019-2020 Salary Cap

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the new salary cap for the 2019-2020 season during the league’s Board of Governors meeting Monday.

According to theScore’s John Matisz, Bettman announced that the 2019-2020 salary cap will be approximately $83 million, an increase of roughly $3.5 million from this season’s salary cap limit of $79.5 million, with Bettman adding that the final figure could fluctuate, but noting that $83 million is the target.

“It could be a million more, it could be a million less, but if you’re focused on a number, the number we told our clubs to focus on was the $83-million range,” Bettman said, according to NHL.com’s Dan Rosen.

Bruins Place Jesse Gabrielle On Unconditional Waivers

The Boston Bruins have placed forward Jesse Gabrielle on unconditional waivers in another step towards contract termination, according to CapFriendly.

Gabrielle, 21, played his entire season in the ECHL, but his season was cut short after suffering another concussion back in March, his third head injury since training camp.

Gabrielle will now become an unrestricted free agent.

The Carolina Hurricanes may be without one of their top young stars for the next game or so in their series against the Washington Capitals.

Andrei Svenchnikov is currently in the concussion protocol following his fight with Capitals’ star Alex Ovechkin during last night’s game, which saw Svenchnikov knocked out during the fight.

Hurricanes’ head coach Rod Brind’Amour doesn’t expect Svechnikov to play in game four on Thursday night, according to the Washington Post’s Isabelle Khurshudyan.

Sharks’ Joe Thornton Suspended One-Game

San Jose Sharks’ center Joe Thornton has been suspended for Game 4 of their first round series against the Vegas Golden Knights, the Department of Player Safety officially announced.

Thornton, 39, was hit with the suspension for his illegal check to the head of Vegas forward Tomas Nosek.

“I honestly thought I barely touched him” Thornton said of the incident, according to The Mercury News’ Curtis Pashelka. “He just came right back; it was just one of those plays that it is what it is. I think my son hits me like that six times a day, it’s just a weird position to put himself in. That’s all.”
