Red Wings Have Multiple, Short-Term Offers On Table for Mike Green

The Detroit Red Wings are doing their best to lockup pending unrestricted free agent Mike Green to ensure he doesn’t land with a new team this summer.

According to The Athletic’s Craig Custance, the Red Wings have offered one- and two-year contracts to the defenseman, who will be 33 next season.

“I anticipate whether he signs with us or someone else, he’ll be on the ice for the first day of training camp,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told Custance, per the report. “Everything, I’m told, he should be green-lighted for the first day.”

Green notched 33 points in 66 games for Detroit last season.

Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard Wants to Retire with Team

Detroit Red Wings netminder Jimmy Howard wants to stay put when the 2019 NHL Trade deadline approaches, even if it means the possibility of being dealt to a contender.

Howrd, 34, has spent his entire 13-year career in Detroit, and would prefer to sign a new contract with the Red Wings rather than suit up for a new team.

“Obviously I want to stay here,” Howard said (h/t NHL.com). “This city has become home, not only for myself but for my family as well. I definitely don’t want to relocate at all. So it would mean the world to me to be able to end my career here in Detroit.”

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he would speak to Howard and his representatives within the next month to discuss his future with the organization.

“I want to see what they’re thinking [in terms of a contract],” Holland said.

“I do feel like I have a lot of good hockey left,” Howard said. “I feel like I can keep going. Do I see the light at the end of the tunnel? Yeah. It’s definitely there. I am getting older in this League. I realize that it’s becoming a young man’s League. But at the same time I want to keep playing. I’m having the time of my life.”

Red Wings’ Anthony Mantha Out Four To Six Weeks

The Detroit Red Wings will be without bright spot forward Anthony Mantha, who has developed impressively this season, will miss four to six weeks with a hand injury and will undergo surgery today, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Mantha injured his hand while fighting with Patrik Nemeth of the Colorado Avalanche, a game that resulted in the two-game suspension of Tyler Bertuzzi.

Mantha has picked up 14 points in 27 games this season.

Red Wings’ Mike Green Out a Month Due to Virus

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green will be out for a month as he deals with a virus, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Green, who a two-year, $10.75-million extension with Detroit this offseason, missed the final nine games of last season doe to a neck injury and underwent cervical spine surgery at the conclusion of the NHL season, so the latest bump in the road has to be frustrating.

The virus has kept Green off the ice and out of action for the entire preseason.
