Flames’ Matthew Tkachuck Suspended One Game

Published

on

The Calgary Flames will be without forward Matthew Tkachuck for one game as the league handed him a one-game suspension.

This will mark Tkachuk’s third suspension of his career.

The fiery Calgary forward will receive another hearing with the disciplinary committee after spearing Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matt Martin from the bench during last night’s game.

Tkachuk is receiving the hearing for “unsportsmanlike conduct”.

You can hear the NHL’s announcement here, or read below:

“While the spear itself is not forceful or malicious enough to merit supplemental discipline on its own, two factors caused this play to rise to the level of a suspension. First, Tkachuk is on the bench when he intentionally strikes a player on the playing surface…second, Tkachuk is a repeat offender, having been suspended for a similar incident just ten games ago.”

Flames’ Tobias Rieder Placed On Waivers

The Calgary Flames have placed Tobias Rider on waivers after he has struggled to produce offensively to start the season, according to The Athletic’s James Mirtle.

Rieder, who inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Flames in September, continues his struggles following a rough season with the Edmonton Oilers where he failed to notch a goal in 67 games and was a source of frustration for team leadership.

Rieder has again struggled to be effective and will now hope to get a chance with another team.

Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau Enjoying Strong Season

Published

on

The Calgary Flames have seen some strong play from forward Johnny Gaudreau, who has played well enough to earn his 5th All-Star selection.

“Obviously he deserves it,” Flames forward Michael Frolik said, according to NHL.com. “He’s an unbelievable player. He’s so fast, and in those small spaces, those tight turns, he can handle the puck with speed. It’s fun to watch him and he’s been great this year.”

Flames defenseman Mark Giordana spoke highly of Gaudreau’s play.

“He can get you the puck in situations where you don’t think he can,” Giordano said. “But I think what people don’t see is just how competitive he is. The guys who are the best players in the League are [competitive] because they want the puck in key situations, and that’s how he is.

“Just look at his overtime play and stuff like that. I’m happy for the way his career is going but this year he’s taken that next step, for sure.”

“I think last year we played with Micheal Ferland, who was a little bit more of a shooter,” Gaudreau said of his strong play this season.

“Lindholm, obviously, is a shooter as well, but he can see the ice really well. He can make some pretty high-end plays, so I think I just got an opportunity to shoot a little more with a player like that on my line.”
