Lightning Hopeful To Sign John Tavares

The Tampa Bay Lightning are hoping that John Tavares chooses to sign with them when free agency opens on July 1st, and the move would require the team to do some financial tweaking to make it work.

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said the team would have to clear cap room, but it would be worth it. Tampa Bay has roughly $5.3M in cap space which would make a Tavares signing challenging as he is likely to command far more than that annually.

“We think he’s one of the best players in the league,” Yzerman said.

Tampa Bay also has to do work with their own players as they have to address restricted free agents Adam Erne, Cedric Paquette, and Slater Koekkoek, along with pending unrestricted free agent Andrej Sustr.
